A.I. and the power of patterns!
A.I. or Artificial Intelligence, is something we hear almost everyday! "This app uses A.I. to match your personality to other people," or, "We use A.I. to drive this car!" There are so many uses for it in today's world!
What are some things that A.I. can do? Well, one of the fundamentals of A.I. is pattern recognition. An excellent example of this is seen in Darcy Pattison's A.I.. The DeepMind research team helped their A.I. program, AlphaGo, to learn pattern recognition via deep learning, its own kind of A.I.
Let's say you want an A.I. to be able to recognize cats by using rules. Fundamentally, a cat is a circle with two triangles for ears. But what if the cat's missing an ear? Or what if it's curled up and hiding it's face?
You would have to make rules for every possible variation of cats. But with deep learning, you can feed thousands of images to an A.I. labeled "cat" or "not cat." By this method, the A.I. would develop its own understanding of cats (algorithms), and the variation that comes with the numerous images.
A.I. is everywhere nowadays. It's used in cellphones facial recognition, social media uses A.I. for personalized ads, streaming services give custom movie and TV show recommendations, voice assistants, and so many more!
This is why it's important to teach this concept to students. They'll encounter A.I. everyday in some way, shape, or form, and A.I. by Darcy Pattison is a wonderful narrative example of computer science and pattern recognition.
Along with a tale of STEM comes a bonus. Back matter for this book includes a myriad of fascinating facts, insights on the development team for AlphaGo, a timeline of events in A.I. developments, a vocabulary list, and an explanation of what the DeepMind Team is doing with A.I. now.
