Traveling for Research

We were thrilled to be able to travel to POLAND for research on this book. We visited Polish friends and went to all the historical sites for Copernicus, including:

  • Torun, Copernicus's Birthplace
  • Krakow University, where Copernicus studied
  • Frombork Cathedral, where Copernicus lived and worked as a Catholic Church cleric for over 30 years.

Here are a few photos from our trip.

Darcy in Torun, Poland
Darcy in front of the Copernicus house in Torun, Poland, the birthplace of Copernicus. Nearby was a gingerbread cafe, and we sampled that!
Krakow Univeristy clock
See the two green doors above the white archway? On the hour, the clock above them chimes the hours, and the green doors open. A series of Catholic saint statues march out to mark the new hour.
Frombork Cathedral, where Copernicus lived and worked for over 30 years.
This is the Frombork Cathedral, where Copernicus lived and worked for over 30 years. In the distance, you can see the Vistula Lagoon, which is separated from the Baltic Sea by a thin strip of land. The cathedral is probably twice the size as in Copernicus's day, but the Baltic Sea hasn't changed. Just to the side is the Copernicus Museum, with many historical artifacts. Fascinating place!
Of course, after I came home, I still had to do lots more research. But for this book, the trip--actually being in the places where Copernicus had been--was crucial to writing the story
