Fall Books for Kids

The Earth has journey around the sun another couple months and the season is about to change. Scorching summer days will morph into crisp cool days with colorful leaves. It's a certainty.

Books About Fall for Kids

Got Me a Cat started on a fall day at a writing retreat. I wrote the words, "She arrived on Halloween Even, in the Year of the Acorns."

I loved the idea of the year of the acorns. Here in the Ozark Mountains, there are some years when the acorns literally cover the ground, and the wild pigs and other wildlife grow fat from the abundance. Of course, SHE was a cat.

Somehow, cats and dogs often find their way into my stories and this is a special cat.

"I told the cat we didn't need a pet, but she didn't understand. She stayed to play all that Saturday. We played Tag and Chase. We played Get Buried in the Leaves and Jump Out like a Dolphin. We played Catch a Dropping Acorn. We played Watch the Sunset."

The story just worked. When the new neighbor child--the real owner of the cat--showed up, she was hearing impaired and the story became a story about sign language, also. Early in my career, I taught at the Arkansas School for the Deaf, so I'd always wanted to write about a child with a hearing impairment.
